Tim’s Take: Paint Protection Film
Paint protection film (PPF) is an 8mil clear, urethane film designed to protect the paint from scratches, chips, and bug/bird stains. It is great for sports and luxury cars, the beloved daily driver, company vehicles, motorcycles, classics, and work trucks …(boats too!)… to help your vehicle hold the highest value possible. The film’s self-healing properties allow for a smooth, scratch-free surface and care-free maintenance. Most PPF is done in gloss clear, but other colors and finishes, such as matte, are available.
Tim believes that covering paint in PPF is only way preserve a cars factory finish. It is the #1 product that he believes in. If you’re contemplating between a ceramic coating and PPF, he would highly recommend the investment of PPF as nothing else on the market can protect the way it can. If good, better, and best were an idea here, good would be a ceramic coating. Better would be PPF, and best would be PPF + ceramic coating for the ultimate protection and ease of maintenance for your vehicle. He also uses a plotter to precut the film to the exact size and shape needed to fit the panel properly and to avoid cutting directly on precious paints.
His favorite brands of PPF to work with are Legend, Suntek, and 3M, but he mostly works with Legend and appreciates that they are made in the USA! Legend’s PPF has a 12-year lifespan and with their new technology, yellowing film is a thing of the past. He also highly values his Graphtec plotter to precut the PPF with the latest technology. This also ensures there is little to no cutting on the vehicle.
This being said, he does not believe that PPF is for everyone. Exterior surfaces of the vehicle that already have heavy paint defects such as deep scratches and chips will not allow the PPF to lay properly on the paint and will appear as if there’s contamination. New vehicles or ones with fewer miles are better candidates for PPF, but please don’t hesitate to reach out if you would like to know if PPF would be a good option for you!
